Diving the Florida Keys

The Florida Keys run from Key Largo to the north to Key West in the south. The Florida Keys have the only living coral reefs in the continental United States. No matter what aspect of diving you like, the Keys have it all: coral reefs teeming with life, a wealth of wreck diving, drift diving, night diving, snorkeling, and extraordinary underwater photo opportunities. The reef depths average 20 to 40 feet before spilling over a steep slope to 120 or more feet. There is an abundance of brain, star and elkhorn corals surrounded by a vast diversity of fish throughout the reefs. Charter services run up and down the Keys taking divers to greatest dive sites. The Keys offer some of the best diving in the U.S. The large reef systems and numerous wrecks provide unlimited opportunities for divers year-round.

Best time to dive

Year-round the diving is great, but wind can cause rough conditions in the late fall, winter, and early spring months.

Visibility

Visibility averages 30 to 100+ feet

Water temperatures

Water temperatures are 85 °F in summer months and fall into the low 70s in the winter.

Weather and climate

Florida has a semi-tropical climate. It is very hot and humid from June through August. Expect temperatures to exceed 90 degrees F and humidity to hover near 100 percent. Cooler temperatures are found during the winter months between December and March when temperatures are around 75 degrees and the humidity is much less. It rains nearly every day in the summer, but the showers are generally short and the sun usually quickly reappears. Florida is the sunshine state and also the thunderstorm and lightning state. Due to the abundance of warm moist air from the Gulf of Mexico and the hot tropical sun, conditions are perfect for the formation of thunderstorms.

General information

Florida is located in the southeastern United States. Florida is bordered on the west coast by the Gulf of Mexico and on the east coast by the Atlantic Ocean. The Florida Keys begin just south of Miami at Key Largo and extend south to south west forming an arc and ending at the famous Key West, where the southern most point of the U.S. exists. The Keys are connected by bridges making access simple and easy. The Florida Keys is a water and boaters playground.

The Florida Keys offer an assortment of accommodations from quiet bed and breakfasts to resorts. There are also many small “mom and pop” type accommodations making for a very Keys experience. Good restaurants are available on the large Keys, such as Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, and Key West, but even some of the smaller keys offer some excellent seafood cuisine.

Diving Florida’s West Coast

Tidal marshes form part of the coastline between St. Marks and Crystal River, the Big Bend of Florida’s west coast. Crystal River and Homosassa Springs are the winter home of the West Indian Manatees. Homosassa Spring is one of the best areas to observe Manatees in 20 to 30 feet of water.

The coastline between Tampa, Sarasota, and Naples has a great artificial reef program, wrecks, and a couple deep sinkholes, where there is an abundance of marine life. There are many wrecks along the west coast. The Bay Ronto, a 400-foot British freighter in 110 feet of water lies 30 miles south of Venice. The 266-foot Baja California sank in 114 feet of water in the Gulf, 25 miles south of Naples.

Spearfishing is very popular in the Gulf of Mexico. With ledges, wrecks, and artificial reefs Grouper, Hogfish, and various snapper are common. Turtles and an occasional whale shark can also be seen offshore.

Diving Florida’s East Coast

Some of the best diving on Florida’s east coast is from around Jupiter south to Miami. The Gulf Stream runs very close to shore in this area keeping water temperatures up in winter and visibility decent most of the year. Dives include reefs, ledges, oil rig platforms that were sunk offshore, and wrecks. Dive sites are easy to get to since you only have to go offshore a mile or so to get to the good stuff. Everything from small reef fish to large palagics run close to shore and can be seen on almost every dive. There is no shortage of diving in this area of Florida. Charter services are available throughout this area as well as some live-aboard charters that run to the Bahamas, which are only 60 miles east.

Best time to dive

Year-round diving is great. Summer months bring calm seas and some of the best visibility.

Visibility

Visibility ranges anywhere from 20 to 100 feet depending the time of year and what the Gulf Stream is doing. The best visibility is generally during late spring and all summer.

Water temperatures

Water temperatures rarely drop below 70 °F in winter and reach the mid 80s in summer.

Diving the Atlantic Coast

Diving the Atlantic Coast includes South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, and New Jersey. Diving in this area is mostly about wrecks and artificial reefs. Spearfishing is also very popular. Abnormally shallow shoals along the coast have contributed to the large number of wrecks along the Atlantic’s bottom, along with wars, weather, and wary seamanship. The wrecks range in depth from about 25 feet to more than 170 feet, but most of the popular dives are between 80 feet and 125 feet. If you like wreck diving, the Atlantic coast of U.S. is the place for you.

Visibility averages 20 to 80+ feet depending on when and where you’re diving.

Water temperatures
